About Us

emergency serviceWood Street Veterinary Hospital is one of the longest established practices in the South East, and one of only a handful of Approved Veterinary Hospitals in the London area. We have a highly dedicated and skilled team to look after all of your pets' needs. Staff members are on the premises 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to look after our patients. We provide an emergency service so that there is always a vet and nurse available

Established in 1900, Wood Street Veterinary Hospital has been providing exceptional animal and veterinary care for many years. Our status as a Tier 3 Animal Hospital reflects our commitment to animal care and as a centre of excellence. We are also a Registered Training Practice for Veterinary Nurses.

We have two branch surgeries, Oakwood Veterinary Surgery in Radlett and Holders Hill Veterinary Surgery in Mill Hill. Each surgery is fully equipped for everyday operations but occasionally specialised procedures will be referred to the main Hospital. We have an animal ambulance to assist our clients with transport and can provide a medication and food delivery service if required.

We see a wide variety of patients at the hospital and our team of veterinary surgeons have an extensive range of knowledge and experience. We also undertake a lot of charity work predominantly for the RSPCA at the Southridge Animal Centre.

Our friendly reception team will greet you and then you will be seen by one of our vets who will examine your pet in one of our three, fully equipped consulting rooms.

History of Wood Street Veterinary Hospital

history The Hospital is housed in an impressive early 19th Century stucco villa with a slated roof and is a Grade II listed building.

W. Dawson Wallis , born 1870, graduated from Edinburgh Veterinary College on 24th May 1895 and initially worked in a veterinary practice located at 89 High Street, Barnet before establishing the practice at 74 Wood Street at the turn of the century.  The practice was very much a mixed practice tending to the needs of a variety of animals including horses, pigs, cattle, dogs and cats.

Many students from the Royal Veterinary College came to the practice for experience. One of these students, Mr Jack Pickup, joined the practice as an assistant. Jack Pickup MRCVS was born and lived all of his life in Hertfordshire and graduated from The Royal Veterinary College, London on 22nd December 1923. Shortly after joining the practice he married his employer’s daughter, Edith, and together they ran the practice through the difficult years of the 30’s and 40’s after the death of W. Dawson Wallis in January 1928.

historyIn the latter part of the 1940’s Jack Pickup was able to take on an assistant (although no records can be found) who helped him move the practice forward through a very changeable climate following the Second World War. Michael J. R Stockman MRCVS qualified from London on 11th July 1949 and joined the practice in 1954, initially as an assistant and later became a Partner. They worked together until Jack Pickup retired in 1967.

Mike Stockman and his wife Valarie Stockman MRCVS (who qualified at the same time as her husband) worked together at the practice. Both worked very hard to obtain the status of Veterinary Hospital for Wood Street. The hospital was one of the very first to be given the accreditation, which is a true reflection of the dedication of the Stockman’s and their Partners. Mike Stockman became President of the British Veterinary Hospitals Association and was a leading official in the Kennel Club for many years.

Mr and Mrs Stockman were joined in Partnership by John Graham MRCVS who qualified at Bristol University 5th July 1961 and Mark Winwood MRCVS who graduated from Liverpool on the 9th July 1971.

Antony White MRCVS graduated from Bristol University in 1992 and joined the hospital as an assistant in 1992 he later became a Partner in 1997.

Tony was joined in 2001 by Phillip Barr MRCVS who also qualified from Bristol in 1991 and then joined Wood Street as a Partner.

Tony and Phil are the current Partners of Wood Street Veterinary Hospital and its branches, however please see our Staff page for more information on all of our current vets.
