Facilities

LabLaboratory

The surgery has on-site laboratory equipment which enables us  to look at many blood, urine, hair and skin samples the same day.  This enables us to  make quicker diagnoses  and treat your pets as soon as possible. Some samples still need to be sent to external specialist laboratories but most results take less than a week to come back.

LabRadiography

At Oakwood Veterinary Surgery we have the facilities to take radiographs (X-rays) of your pet. For some investigative treatment and x-rays we may wish to organise for your pet to been seen at Wood Street Veterinary Hospital in Barnet as the hospital has an advanced digital radiography system. There they are able to take radiographs of all pets from small to very large and most surgical procedures can then be carried out immediately afterwards.

Hospitalisation and Intensive Care Facilities

We have excellent care facilities for our patients coming in for a procedure and going home the same day.  For patients requiring intensive care, we will organise for them to go to Wood Street Veterinary Hospital where they have an oxygen cage, incubator, monitoring equipment, infusion pumps, syringe drivers and most importantly a dedicated, caring nursing team who are present 24-hours per day.

LabDental Treatment

We have a top of the range dental machine  with a high speed drill, polisher  and ultrasonic scaler similar to your own dentist.  Radiographs are taken as required and all dental treatment is carried out under general anaesthetic.

LabSurgical Facilities

The surgery has an operating theatre benefiting from modern monitoring and surgical equipment.  Our aim is to provide the very best facilities and care for your pets.  We achieve this by providing general surgical procedures here at the surgery and referring more intensive cases, or those requiring the use of the specialised facilities to Wood Street Veterinary Hospital in Barnet.  If better for your pet, or more practical for you, then our ambulance can be used for the transfer.

lab ECG (electrocardiograph) and Ultrasound (ultrasound available at Wood Street Veterinary Hospital)

Oakwood has an ECG machine available for our patients.  ECG’s show us the electrical activity in the heart and also information regarding heartbeat rhythym. Wood Street has a high quality ultrasound scanner.  Ultrasound is totally non-invasive and allows us to make many diagnoses we would otherwise be unable to. We can use ultrasound to look at the movement of the heart and flow of blood in conscious animals. We have vets with a particular interest in cardiology and these facilities allow us to investigate cases to a high level. The ultrasound machine is also configured for use within the abdomen so we can use this to investigate problems affecting the liver, kidneys, spleen, gut etc, and even for some joint and muscle problems.

LabEndoscopy and Laparoscopy (available at Wood Street Veterinary Hospital)

These minimally invasive procedures allow us to examine many of the body organs and cavities. We are able to examine joints, internal organs and the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems without the need for large surgical approaches,. The 'key hole' approach gives lower morbidity (i.e. less pain and faster recovery) than traditional surgery). Many conditions can be treated surgically using these techniques. Several of our vets now have a keen interest and a growing experience with these techniques.  Currently we are able to offer ovariohysterectomy (spaying) using key hole surgery in bitches and retained testicle removal in dogs. We are also performing many other procedures both diagnostically and  surgically.
