The most common use for this technique is bitch spays. The traditional method involves an incision through through the skin and muscle layers to get to the uterus and ovaries and remove them. With keyhole surgery we make two or three very small incisions in the abdomen to place ports which enable us to use specialist equipment to perform an ovariectomy (removal of just the ovaries). The abdomen is insufflated (expanded) with carbon dioxide gas to provide a clear view and working space. We use a small camera and television screens to visulise and cauterize the ovaries to remove them quickly and with much less trauma to the tissues. In most cases we remove just the ovaries but in some patients we also remove the uterus.
This procedure is suitable for most larger bitches and patients are assessed on an individual basis for their suitability. Please ask any of our vets or the head nurse for more details.
